Johnathan stepped into the bar. The very same one Jenna disappeared from a week earlier. He knew that after forty-eight hours the chance of finding a missing person alive decreased considerably, but he refused to give up.
Tonight, he was going to follow up on the only lead he had so far. Squinting, he surveyed the patrons and spotted his old partner sitting on a bar stool at the counter, wearing his signature black suit. Squeezing his way through the crowds on the dance floor, he sat on the empty stool next to him.
âHi, Phillip.â
âJohnathan.â
âYou said you werenât going to come back here.â
âI have my reasons,â he said, signaling the bartender to drop another shot of whiskey.
âAnything to do with Maria?â
The manâs hand shook as he brought the glass up to his lips. Tilting his head back, he downed the shot. âIâm close, man.â
âIs that what youâve been doing all these years?â John asked, studying his old friend. Dark, saggy bags framed Phillipâs sunken eyes and his clothes hung off his body. Evidence that the passing years werenât exactly favourable to him, but he didnât look like he cared.
âWhen was the last time you had a good meal?â he asked Phillip. His friend shrugged his shoulders and stared into the empty glass. âOkay, that settles it. You are coming to our house for dinner.â
âI canât. I need to stay here.â
âYou arenât doing yourself any good if you are dead on your feet. Come on.â
The man groaned, but he allowed John to grab him by the jacket, pulling him towards the door. Phillip had saved his butt on more than one occasion, and he wasnât about to watch him waste away. Not if there was something he could do to help.
âWhen did you get into town?â John asked.
âA few weeks back.â
âAnd you didnât call me?â
His friend shrugged his shoulders again. âAfter what happened...â
âNone of that was your fault.â
âI shot you.â
John looked at him over the roof of the car. His friendâs eyes were still full of guilt. âWho doesnât get shot in our line of work?â
Phillip shook his head and ducked into the vehicle. âYouâre crazy, dude.â
âMaybe so.â John really didnât know who the man was next to him anymore, but he was in the business of saving lives, and Phillip looked like he needed saving this time. He owed the man his life on more than one occasion, and it was the least he could do. âJodi is making her infamous meatloaf.â
âWhat made you call me?â the man asked.
âWe can talk about that later. For now, letâs have some chow.â
In truth, he was hesitant to bring it up. His friend looked slightly unhinged and off-balance. Maybe, he would be more himself once he had a belly full of food instead of just liquor.
âSounds good,â Phillip said.
