Johnathan stepped into the bar. The very same one Jenna disappeared from a week earlier. He knew that after forty-eight hours the chance of finding a missing person alive decreased considerably, but he refused to give up.

Tonight, he was going to follow up on the only lead he had so far. Squinting, he surveyed the patrons and spotted his old partner sitting on a bar stool at the counter, wearing his signature black suit. Squeezing his way through the crowds on the dance floor, he sat on the empty stool next to him.

“Hi, Phillip.”

“Johnathan.”

“You said you weren’t going to come back here.”

“I have my reasons,” he said, signaling the bartender to drop another shot of whiskey.

“Anything to do with Maria?”

The man’s hand shook as he brought the glass up to his lips. Tilting his head back, he downed the shot. “I’m close, man.”

“Is that what you’ve been doing all these years?” John asked, studying his old friend. Dark, saggy bags framed Phillip’s sunken eyes and his clothes hung off his body. Evidence that the passing years weren’t exactly favourable to him, but he didn’t look like he cared.

“When was the last time you had a good meal?” he asked Phillip. His friend shrugged his shoulders and stared into the empty glass. “Okay, that settles it. You are coming to our house for dinner.”

“I can’t. I need to stay here.”

“You aren’t doing yourself any good if you are dead on your feet. Come on.”

The man groaned, but he allowed John to grab him by the jacket, pulling him towards the door. Phillip had saved his butt on more than one occasion, and he wasn’t about to watch him waste away. Not if there was something he could do to help.

“When did you get into town?” John asked.

“A few weeks back.”

“And you didn’t call me?”

His friend shrugged his shoulders again. “After what happened...”

“None of that was your fault.”

“I shot you.”

John looked at him over the roof of the car. His friend’s eyes were still full of guilt. “Who doesn’t get shot in our line of work?”

Phillip shook his head and ducked into the vehicle. “You’re crazy, dude.”

“Maybe so.” John really didn’t know who the man was next to him anymore, but he was in the business of saving lives, and Phillip looked like he needed saving this time. He owed the man his life on more than one occasion, and it was the least he could do. “Jodi is making her infamous meatloaf.”

“What made you call me?” the man asked.

“We can talk about that later. For now, let’s have some chow.”

In truth, he was hesitant to bring it up. His friend looked slightly unhinged and off-balance. Maybe, he would be more himself once he had a belly full of food instead of just liquor.

“Sounds good,” Phillip said.
